 FITTING INSTRUCTIONS
______________________

The new EPROMS for the BoardMaster 4000 can be fitted without
removing the lid of the unit by following the steps below:-

1) Switch off the power supply and remove the mains lead.

2) Turn the unit upside down onto a soft surface to prevent damage.

3) Connect yourself to an anti-static lead via a wrist strap in
accordance with normal anti-static precautions.

4) Remove the EPROM cover plate by removing its 4 securing screws.

5) Remove the old EPROM(S).

6) Insert the new EPROMS. The EPROM marked (0) is inserted in the
socket marked U2 - EPROM 0 on the PCB, and the EPROM marked
(1) is inserted in the socket marked U3 - EPROM 1 on the PCB. The
pin 1 end of the sockets is toward the rear of the case. Ensure that the
leads of the new EPROMS are straight and do not use excessive force
to avoid damaging the fine tracks on the PCB.

7) Double check that the EPROMS are in the correct way round.

8) Replace the EPROM cover plate.

9) Turn the unit over again, insert the mains lead and switch on. Check
that the new version number is shown on the sign on screen and that
the self test passes as usual.

below for details of new ICs and other features of your new software.

 NEW FEATURES
_____________

The following is a complete description of all the changes made to the BoardMaster 4000 software since the first release. Please refer to the
operators/programming manuals for full details of any changes shown.

VERSION NUMBER: BM/1.01	DATE: 06-07-90

TTL:	74593/597
INTERFACE:	4464,5517

1) During V-I comparison, if BDO test was saved the 8 pin V-I test
was executed when comparing. This was fixed. Also, the HELP text
for the display was changed to allow for the fact that the user may have
selected either ACTUAL, MASTER or BOTH curves.
__________________________________________________________

VERSION NUMBER: BM/1.02	DATE: 20-08-90

1) BASIC changed to avoid problems when editing a long line at
bottom of screen. Previously, the line repeated itself until the entire
screen was full of garbage.

2) Bug in BASIC setup command for 8 pin chips fixed.

3) 4538 test changed to avoid output short failures on Cext pins.

4) Bug in BASIC setup command for pins 33-40 fixed.

5) System changed to display result after test if in compare mode AND
loop mode so that result can be seen before comparison takes place.

6) System changed to correctly stop test in loop mode if CANCEL was
pressed in response to a pre-test warning (eg. no clip positioning).
Before the test would continue even after CANCEL pressed.

7) References to ABORT changed to CANCEL.

8) CANCEL key takes over functions of CLEAR key (stopping loop
tests, clearing text entries) and CLEAR key changed to PRINT
providing full screen dump facilities. HELP text changed to allow for
this operational change. Note that stickers are available from ABI to
modify the keyboard of your system, if necessary, to make it
compatible with this change.

9) 8T26 and 6116 circuit compensation improved.

10) 8440 (Z80-SIO) compensation improved.

11) V-I COMPARISON display changed so that a box showing
comparison scores for all channels is displayed. It can be toggled on
and off by repeated pressing of EXECUTE. HELP text also changed to
suit.

12) If a BASIC program with a fault in it was executed in external run
mode in one of the LOOP modes, it was impossible to regain control of
the system without powering down. This was fixed by simulating a
CANCEL key depression if this occurs.

VERSION NUMBER: BM/1.03	DATE: 07-09-90

TTL:	74350,74408,74906,74907
CMOS:	4175
MEMORY:	3101,6810,8225
INTERFACE:	8815,8262,2510,314,380
LSI:	1602,6850,8442

1) Original BDO states now correctly restored after COMPARE
operation. This bug probably explains occurrences of DEFAULT
CONFIG if the system was powered down after doing a COMPARE
using a file where the BDO settings were changed from the default
values.

2) System modified to ignore BDO states greater than 2 embedded in
PCB file, as would be left over from a DDS-40 type PCB file with
BDO settings other than LOW, HIGH or OFF. This bug together with
bug above caused garbage to appear on the display if the BDO
CONFIG function was attempted after doing a COMPARE with a
DDS-40 file with BDO states other than LOW, HIGH or OFF.
3) MASTER/SLAVE changed to PROGRAMMER/OPERATOR to
avoid annoying certain customers! Manual text changed accordingly.

if PRINT was inadvertently pressed.

2) 74384/2514 bug fixed.

3) 74518/682/683/688/689 test improved to ensure that all states of
output(s) checked regardless of input wiring.

4) Editing operations changed so that DEL key clears only last
character in buffer rather than entire buffer. This makes text entry
more convenient if an error is made.

5) BASIC SETUP command now works correctly for 22 pin ICs

6) BASIC SETUP command modified to detect invalid chip size.

7) TESTBASIC sign on message changed to BoardMaster from DDS!

INTERFACE:	8277,8838,8T38,9014,9301,9309,9312,9314,9328,9338

1) If THRESHOLDS is set to USER, the threshold config box appears
before performing test to avoid switching menus.

2) FLOATING/OPEN CIRCUIT function selection changed to
SAME/DIFFERENT/OFF. When OFF, these conditions are not
detected.

3) When performing a V-I test, the config box appears to avoid
switching menus and to remind user of settings.

4) When an EPROM test is saved, the first 16 bytes and checksum are
now stored so that they can be compared.

5) All PCB FILE EDIT operations must now be confirmed by user to
avoid unintentional file modification.

6) SHORT LOCATOR function added as an additional item on TEST
menu.

7) NEW FILE and EXISTING FILE messages added to SAVE
function. Also, the message EXISTING IC REFERENCE is now
displayed if the entered IC REF is present in the file. This is to avoid
unintentional over-writing of results.

8) LCD display invert facility added using MISCELLANEOUS
CONFIG screen.

9) SELF TEST FUNCTION MENU facility added to avoid using 999?
numbers for built in diagnostic tests.

10) V-I SAVE/COMPARE function changed. V-I files are now
incorporated in PCB files, so that an entire test for a PCB can be
addressed with a single file. The V-I data is stored in files with the
extension V01, V02 etc, but these files are invisible to the operator.
For compatibility with version 1 (VIT) files, the V-I VERSION can be
selected using CONFIG. If version 1 is selected, the V-I COMPARE
function operates as before using the existing VIT files, but note that it
is not possible to save VIT type files with version 2. DELETE, COPY,
RENAME, EDIT, SAVE functions modified to ensure that the
corresponding V-I file is deleted, copied etc. as required.

11) EPROM diagnostic checksum failure message changed to NON-
RELEASED.

12) PRINTER ON/OFF option added to library review, to provide
convenient way of printing entire library.

13) "Header required" warning message changed to "External
components required".

14) Test information and note boxes now displayed after test even
when SAVE and/or TRACE is switched on.

15) When printing a compare log during a COMPARE operation, the
system did not send an EOF character regardless of the setting of
TERM. this did not affect a serial printer, but prevented the user from
uploading the compare log to a PC. This was fixed. The same facility
was implemented in the new LIBRARY REVIEW PRINT feature, the
PCB FILE PRINT STATISTICS and also to the BASIC LLIST and
LPRINT commands.

16) The user prompt in COMPARE mode was changed to display
without flashing.

17) The PCB DOWNLOAD facility did not work at high baud rates
because the system took time out to change the WAITING FOR DATA
message to DOWNLOADING FILE after receipt of the first character.
This was fixed by eliminating the WAITING FOR DATA message.

18) Commas used instead of full stops for decimal points in all voltage
tolerance and threshold values in all non-English languages.

19) Bugs fixed and/or compensation improved in 74156, 8253 and
8259 tests.

20) SEE NOTE 6 added to 1602 test.

VERSION NUMBER: BM/2.02	DATE: 27-02-92

1) DIT-24XP conversion facility added. When a DIT-24XP disk is
inserted, the system detects it, and a subsequent PCB file disk to disk
COPY operation is assumed to need a conversion prior to writing on
the destination disk, which must be a formatted BM4000 double sided
type. The other disk operations (DELETE, RENAME) cannot be
carried out on a DIT-24XP disk - if attempted a SECTOR NOT
FOUND error results. Note the following comments about the file
conversion, but see the manual for full details:-

   a) MID LEVEL converts to MID LOW
   b) BDO states are set to L L L L H H H H respectively
   c) Threshold voltages are set to TTL default values
   d) Text above 32 characters is blanked
   e) Chip size is set to 14, although I'm not sure where this is used
   f) Pin voltages are set to -9.99V (ie. 0000H)
   g) Logic test (25 test etc) is converted to S/O/V test

1) All languages are now combined into the same version. Using the
CONFIGURE function you can now select from ENGLISH, FRENCH,
GERMAN, ITALIAN and SPANISH languages for the operating
menus, HELP text and IC notes.

2) The TRACE timebase function has been removed.

3) The HELP REVIEW now displays IC notes as well as all HELP
screens.

4) OUT OF CIRCUIT only analogue library added containing several
operational amplifier and comparator tests.

5) NOTES added for IC's which can only be tested out of circuit. This
applies to 7423, 4009, 4010 in addition to the linear IC's mentioned
above.

6) The DDS/BM4000 selection procedure is now handled by a DIL
switch setting. The bottom left hand switch is left open (off) to select
the BM4000, which is the default setting, and closed (on) if the
software is running on DDS-40 hardware. In this latter case the
keyboard layout is changed and the video frame rate is set to 60Hz.

7) Software Update Available notice added. This message is displayed
after the next software release date to inform the user that an upgrade is
available.

8) The 8243 test failed in loop mode on the second and subsequent
tests. This has now been fixed.

9) Foreign language accent characters added to LCD board character
generator and all text modified to use them. These special characters
are converted to normal ones for use with video monitor. Note that if
you are upgrading to this version and you intend to use either French,
Italian or Spanish you will need to install a new character generator
EPROM in your BoardMaster 4000 system - contact product support
for more details.

10) 8031, 74185, 4017 and 8250 tests modified and improved.
__________________________________________________________

VERSION NUMBER: BM/2.30	DATE: 16/09/92

MEMORY:	7164,7185,7186
LSI:	1854

1) Circuit compensation improved for 6551.

2) 8228 test improved.
3) 4002 pin name error corrected.

4) 9902 note (wrong capacitor value) corrected.

5) DISK COPY facility added. This is accessed by selecting COPY
from the UTILITIES menu, then selecting DISK COPY. The disk is
copied track by track regardless of the file structure. Because of
memory limitations three disk swaps are required to copy an entire
disk.

6) In PCB FILE EDIT, it was possible to select invalid threshold
combinations and there was no check or error message. This was fixed
by including a similar check to that used in CONFIG, and re-entering
the edit screen if an error existed.

7) When printing file statistics in PCB FILE EDIT, the wrong mode
message (IP MH) was printed for V-I tests in the file. This was fixed.

8) 8031 test improved.

9) When listing a long BASIC program with the LCD set to inverse
video mode, the lines scrolled onto the bottom of the screen during the
list did not appear in reverse video. This was fixed.

10) ESC can now be used to cancel short locator auto zero operation.

11) If a disk error occurred when trying to load a user program from a
disk, the error message box was not cleared after the error was
displayed. This was fixed.

12) 4510/4516 compensation improved by allowing for D1-D4 linked
to U/D and also for Q4 linked to PE.

13) 7495 circuit compensation improved.

14) On the LCD display, when pressing HELP to display help text the
status line on the display was not restored after viewing the help text.
This was fixed. The video display was no problem.

15) In PCB FILE EDIT mode, there were several points at which the
system would attempt to process a blank ICREF. These situations were
trapped by looping until a valid ICREF was entered.

1) MasterLink ML-40 software added to allow the system to be used in
remote mode under PC control, using a separately available PC
software package. A new PAL decoder is required to enable the
REMOTE mode, which is selected by an additional option on the
miscellaneous CONFIG menu. For further details of the MasterLink
ML-40 package, see the operators manual or contact our product
support department.

2) An additional option, SWEPT, is now available on the
THRESHOLD menu along with USER and DEFAULT. In SWEPT
mode, the test is repeated with gradually "slackening" thresholds until
no more MID-LEVEL voltages are present. The resulting thresholds
represent the tightest values at which the IC under test will pass, and
are stored in the USER THRESHOLD values. The result can then be
saved using these thresholds, if required.

3) It is no longer possible to do a SAVE or LOGIC TRACE if a high
voltage error has occurred.

4) The keypad interface was modified to avoid problems with lost keys
if IC numbers were entered quickly.

VERSION NUMBER: BM/2.41	DATE: 27/01/93

1) DISPLAY option included on the CONFIG menu. This allows the
operator to select between REFLECTIVE and BACK-LIT LCD displays and NORMAL and INVERSE video. The
MISCELLANEOUS CONFIG menu was changed slightly to allow for
this. Note that the back-lit LCD display is a new feature which is
available from February 1993.

2) 1220 test changed to clear this non-volatile RAM to all zeros after
test regardless of result.

3) Bug fixed in 9902 test. This IC now passes reliably with no need to
add capacitors or use LOOP mode.

4) 8255 test improved.

5) MasterLink mode improved to handle a request from the PC to test
an IC that is not in the library. This is now handled by searching the
floppy disk and running a basic program, if present, as in stand alone
mode. In addition, REMOTE mode was changed to MasterLink mode.
