Readme.txt <V1.5>  English

Thank you for purchasing Fujitsu PrintPartner 4000/8000 or VM4/8 printer.
This floppy disk, PP/VMMENU, allows you to easily change your printer's
features directory from your computer display and keyboard in place of the
printer's control panel.

How to install and run PP/VMMENU
================================

  1. Be sure to use the INSTALL program to install PP/VMMENU to your HD.
     PP/VMMENU does not run if you just copy all files to HD. Just type
     "INSTALL" and ENTER key at the DOS prompt to install this program. You
     can select source/target drive/directory, and some European languages
     other than English for the program in the install program. The selective
     European languages are French, German, Italian, Spanish and Swedish.

  2. You need about 600 KB space on the target drive you would like to
     install PP/VMMENU. The INSTALL program checks the availability of this
     space. If there is not enough space, the INSTALL program gives an
     warning message. If this happens, you should make space on the
     target drive or select other drive as the target in the INSTALL
     program.

  3. The INSTALL will automatically add the PP/VMMENU program path to the
     AUTOEXEC.BAT file if you would like to do. If you would not like
     to do, the INSTALL program do not touch the file. In this case,
     if you would like to run this program from other directory of the
     PP/VMMENU program, please add the PATH setting by yourself in your
     AUTOEXEC.BAT file by an editor program and re-start the PC.
     The example is as follows:

     Original PATH line in the AUTOEXEC.BAT file

         PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\;C:\DOS

     Change is like this

         PATH=C:\WINDOWS;C:\;C:\DOS;c:\ppmenu   (or vmmenu)

  4. To run PP/VMMENU, go to the PP/VMMENU directory first, and type
     PP/VMMENU and ENTER key.

Notes
=====

  1. Do "Selftest" in "Special" menu to review the current printer settings.

  2. Some systems have monochrome screens with some gray levels. If the
     program is installed on such a system, the screens are difficult to
     read due to insufficient contrast. If this situation happened, you can
     solve the problem by selecting the "Color palette..." in the "Options"
     menu and set the color palette to "monochrome palette". After that, the
     readability should be fine.

  3. Some utilities for network control or similar purposes change the drive
     availability information for DOS. So, this program does not check the
     "lastdrive" anymore. So, if you specify one of illegal drive at the
     "Read user created" or "Save as" menus in "Library", you do not get
     the right error message. To avoid such problems, you always should make
     sure that you use only drive names of surely existing drives.

  4. There might be problems using the program together with different
     versions of STACKER due to the usage of overlays. So, you better disable
     STACKER when using the program.

  5. Do not use the DOS MODE command for redirection of parallel
     printer port.

  6. If you turn off the printer, please do the "Set Request Status"
     function in the Special menu first after turning on the printer. If
     you do not, the "Get Info" function may not display correct current
     status of the printer.

  7. Do not use the "Inquire Defaults" or "Inquire Interface" functions while
     the printer is printing the "print font" pages. If you do, a fatal error
     will be displayed because the printer does not respond for the
     functions.

  8. Do not use the "Inquire Defaults" or "Inquire Interface" functions while
     "Language" setting in the printer and PP/VMMENU do not match. If you do,
     a fatal error will be displayed because the printer does not respond
     correctly for the functions.

  9. Do not use the "Inquire Defaults" or "Inquire Interface" functions while
     "Language" setting in the printer and PP/VMMENU are "PCL5" for the
     printer with FPS option. If you do, the printer does not respond
     correctly for the functions.

 10. Do not forget to set "Printer name" setting to the name of your
     printer. This is in "Options : Printer Configuration".

 11. Do not use the "Inquire Defaults", "Inquire Interface" or "Get Info"
     functions while printer is printing some data of "Selftest" or
     "Print Font". If you do, the printer does not respond correctly for the
     functions.

                settings" for PrintPartner 8000 or VM8 printer. When you are
                using thicker paper than ordinary and getting poor quality
                print-out, please try to change this setting to ON. (Do not
                forget to return to OFF when you use an ordinary thickness
                paper.) This is valid for above printers. So, do not forget
