This Supplement and the On-line Help of the Windows 95 Printer Driver
This Installation Supplement of the VM4Win for Windows 95 Printer Driver
provides all the necessary information for its installation. It is only a supplement
to the driver decsription, its setup and handling that you can find in the users
manual of the VM4Win Users Manual in Chapter 1, page 14.
The VM4Win for Windows 95 Printer Driver comes on a 3.5 inch disk. The
description and detailed explanation of the Windows 95 driver is mainly covered
by the On-line Help enclosed on the same disk.

Operating Environment
The VM4Win for Windows 95 Printer Driver requires the following operating
environment:
CPU: 486 or higher
Speed: 33 MHz or more
RAM: at least 8 MB
Free disk space:	at least 5 MB but 20 MB are recommended.
It is mainly required for the spool-file containing the files to be printed.

Installing the Printer Driver
This supplement provides the installation instructions for the VM4Win Printer
Driver using the Add Printer Wizard.

Notice for network users:
Unless you install the optional memory card in your VM4Win printer do not
share any device on your PC across a network. We recommend this because
during printing without memory in the printer the system is shortly stopped
every page causing the network services of that PC to also be stopped.

Notice for users with more printers connected:
If you connect the VM4Win printer to a port where another printer is already
installed and connected (e.g. through a switch box) the other printer may cause
problems because the Printer Driver (Bidi-Manager) of the VM4Win is polling the
port and the printer. Therefore we recommend not to let the VM4Win and
another printer share the same port.

...using the Add Printer Wizard

First connect your printer to the parallel (Centronics) port of the computer.
Then do the following:

1.	Start Windows 95.
2.	Select Start, Settings and Printers from the Windows 95 Taskbar.
3.	Doubleclick on the Add Printer icon to load the Add Printer Wizard .
4.	Click on the Next> button at the bottom of the window.

5.	Then click on m Local printer to make the VM4Win printer local and
continue with a click on the Next> button at the bottom.

	Notice for network users:
The VM4Win printer is not designed to work in a network environment. You can
however use the printer also as shared or share it over the network with
limitations regarding the level of error reporting and handling (see page 4).

6.	Now you can select the manufacturer and the printer from two parallel lists.
However, you will not find the VM4Win printer here because the list only
contains printer manufacturers and models supported by default under Win-
dows 95. Therefore, click on the Have Disk... button to choose the VM4Win
Driver located on the floppy disk delivered with the printer and which you
should insert now into the floppy disk drive of your computer (A: or B:).
7.	In the Install From Disk window you must check and eventually adjust the path
where the VM4Win Driver is located. Then confirm your input by clicking
	on Ok .
8.	The Add Printer Wizard window will reappear and will list the VM4Win printer.
Click on the Next> button to continue the installation.
9.	Now select with a click the port to which you connected the VM4Win printer
(e.g. LPT1). Normally you do not need to configure the chosen printer port.
In case you do, click on the Configure Port... button. To continue click on
	Next> .
10.	Now you could type in a special name for your VM4Win printer but do not
change the one offered by default. Decide whether the VM4Win printer shall
be the Windows 95 default printer or not by clicking m Yes or m No. Finish
the Add Printer Wizard dialogues by clicking on the Finish button.
11.	The VM4Win for Windows 95 Printer Driver Installer is now loading. Select
in the next window the language to be used for the Printer Driver dialogues
by clicking on it and then on Ok to confirm.
12.	If the value of the Regional Settings of the Windows 95 (get there with Start,
Settings, Control Panel, doubleclick on the Regional Settings icon ) is not avail-
able in the VM4Win Printer Driver Installation the country selection window
will pop up. In this case click on the country in which you bought the printer
and confirm by clicking on the Ok button. If the country you bought the
printer in is not available in the list doubleclick on UK as a default.
13.	The next and last installer window, shows the printer model name specific to
the country you selected in the previous dialogue window. Confirm it by
	clicking on the Ok button.
The VM4Win Printer Driver will now be installed. At the end a message box will
indicate the successful installation. Depending on the settings in your Windows 95
environment and the settings you made for the VM4Win Printer Driver it may be
necessary to restart Windows 95 in order to make the Printer Driver settings
active. The Installer will detect such a case and a message box will show up asking
you to confirm the restart. If you have other tasks running or documents open so
that a restart is not convenient at this time then Cancel the restart. In this case do
not use the VM4Win before having restarted Windows 95.
Clicking the Cancel button anywhere during the installation process will imme-
diately stop the installation of the VM4Win Printer Driver. A message box will
notify you then, that the installation has not been completed successfully and you
	have to restart it.

Important:
Depending on the current situation in your Windows 95 environment it can hap-
pen that an alert message of the VM4Win for Windows 95 Printer Driver does not
show up on top of all open windows. Please therefore observe the Taskbar during
printing and click on VM4Win if it appears there to put the driver's message on
top.

Notice for network users:
The VM4Win for Windows 95 Printer Driver and its Bidi manager are connecting
using the printer name. If you change the printer name this connection gets lost
and you will not be able to print.
...using the Printer
Driver in a network
environment
Installation
Using the Add Printer Wizard you can install the shared usage of a VM4Win printer connected to another
PC in the network. You must click on m Network printer in the second Add Printer Wizard window shown
on page 2 of this supplement. With the browse function of the following window you can locate the
VM4Win printer you want to use and select it.

Notice for network users:
The VM4Win printer is a dedicated Windows printer. You can not use this printer
in the DOS environment or from a DOS application at all. Accordingly you must
select m No in the Print from MS-DOS based programs section of the Add Printer Wizard
in which you selected the printer to be installed.
After you confirmed the printer name in the next window the VM4Win for
Windows 95 Printer Driver will be copied from the PC to which the printer is
connected to your local PC. You may check the remote printing facility using the
Printer Test Page from Windows 95 as it is recommended at the end of the
installation.

Important:
Since the VM4Win printer is designed to be used locally you will experience
limitations and deviations from the functionality of the printer as it is documented
in the User's Manual. Only the most important deviations are listed here.
The bidirectional communication functionality cannot work across the network.
Thus, the driver is not able to read the printer status back and indicate it on the
screen. Due to this restriction some driver capabilities are limited. For example:

When you enter the Maintenance function under the Printer Driver the driver
will display the message "Cannot connect".

An error in the printer will not be displayed on your screen. Only in the
spooler window it is indicated that there might be an error. You will have to
check the further status on the printer directly. Once the error is fixed, printing
will restart automatically.

Sharing
You can also share a VM4Win printer connected to your local PC with other PCs
across the network. For this purpose you call up the Sharing function of the
VM4Win Properties menu through these steps: Start, Settings, Printers, click on the
VM4Win icon, File menu, Sharing submenu. Finally activate the Share As function
and enter a name in the available space.
