<<About the MO driver>>

 2. OUTLINE

 The MODISK.SYS version 1.0 is an OS/2 device driver needed to access Fujitsu
 Magneto-Optical (MO) disk drives connected to IBM PC compatible computers.
 Usually, MO disk formats vary with the maker and operating system. MO disks
 formatted in one maker's drive cannot be used in another. However, MODISK.SYS
 automatically detects the disk format and allows most makes of MO drives and
 disk formats to be accessed under OS/2.

  2.1  Operating Environment

       Hardware;
       - IBM PC or 100% compatible
       - SCSI host adapter card
       - Fujitsu MO disk drive (128 or 230 MB) connected via a SCSI interface

       Software;
       - OS: OS/2 version 2.1 or later
       - SCSI adapter driver supplied with OS/2 (*.ADD file)
       - Fujitsu device driver MODISK.SYS

            -  NSR format
            -  Superfloppy disk format
            -  PC hard disk format

       Note: Up to 16 partitions can be recognized on one disk.

       (2) Partition file format (file system)
            -  File allocation table (FAT)

 3.  DETAILED EXPLANATION

  3.1  Compatibility with Other Systems

       The MODISK.SYS driver automatically detects the following four disk
       formats, and assigns logical drive names such as D:, E:, etc.;

       -  NSR format
          Worldwide standard (ISO13346) for multiple partitions. One MO disk
          can be divided into multiple partitions (logical drives). NSR
          (Non-Sequential Recording) is the basis of ISO13346.

       -  Superfloppy disk format
          Typical MO format used in MS-DOS. The whole disk is handled as one
          logical drive. This format is usually referred to as "IBM format."

       -  PC/AT hard disk format
          Partition format used for PC/AT hard disks. One MO disk can be
          divided into multiple partitions using the DOS utility FDISK.

       Note; MO disks formatted or partitioned using formats other than these
             four are detected as being unformatted.

       * MO disks formatted on the following computers and operating systems
         can be read;

     Model   OS          Formatter                      Disk format
     --------------------------------------------------------------------------
     DOS/V DOS 5,6 DOS utilities (FDISK+FORMAT) PC/AT hard disk format
                         Fujitsu (FJFORMAT)             Superfloppy disk format
                         Fujitsu (NFORMAT)              NSR format
                                                        PC/AT hard disk format
                         Adaptec                        PC/AT hard disk format
                                                        Superfloppy disk format
                         Corel                          Superfloppy disk format
             Windows NT NT utility PC/AT hard disk format
                         (FAT file)
             OS/2 OS/2 utility Superfloppy disk format
     --------------------------------------------------------------------------

  3.2  Disk Formatting Function
       The following formatting can be done with the formatting utilities
       supplied with OS/2;

         -  Physical formatting
         -  Partitioning
         -  Superfloppy disk formatting

       See Chapter 7 for further details.

  3.3  Software Configuration
       The MODISK.SYS device driver operates under OS/2 version 2.1 or later,
       and accesses the MO drive via the SCSI manager (OS2ASPI.DMD). The
       following software programs must be present;

       +---------------------------------------------------------------------+
       |                    OS/2 KERNEL (version 2.1 or later)               |

       +-----------------------------+         +-----------------------------+

       Notes;

       1. OS2ASPI.DMD is supported as the SCSI manager.
       2. An HPFS file system cannot be created on an MO disk drive it is a
          removable drive.

  3.4  Installing the Driver Manually

       MODISK.SYS must be loaded in OS/2 before the drive can be accesssed.
       The installation procedure is explained below. The installer disk is in
       drive A and the OS/2 system is in the C:\OS2 directory.

       1) Copy MODISK.SYS to the OS/2 directory.
          > COPY  A:\MODISK.SYS  C:\OS2

       2) Use a text editor to add the following line to the OS/2 environment
          file (CONFIG.SYS);

          DEVICE=C:\OS2\MODISK{option}

       3) Specify the following options if necessary.

  3.5  Option Parameters

       Optional parameters are not case sensitive such as /R and /r.

       1)  Reserved drives
           /Rn or /R:n (n is a number between 1 and 16. Default is 1)

           A series of logical drive names can be reserved for each MO drive
           for future partitioning. If the number of valid partitions at
           initialization exceeds the number of logical drive names reserved,
           and there is no reserved drive priority specification (/S), up to
           16 partitions are allowed on a disk.

           <Sample description> DEVICE= (path name)\MODISK.SYS /R2

           Note : A sample description assigns two logical drives (D: and E:)
                  on the MO drive.

       2)  Reserved drive priority
           /S

           If the number of reserved drives specified with the /R option is
           fewer than the number of valid partitions on a disk, the number of
           reserved drives takes priority. For example, if there are four
           valid partitions on the disk and the number of reserved drives is
           specified at 3, a logical drive name cannot be assigned to the
           fourth partition, and hence it cannot be accessed.

           * Relationship between the number of logical drives assigned and
             the number of partitions

           -----------------------------------------------------------------
           Option Parameter                     /Rn /S            /Rn
           =================================================================
           Number of valid partitions > n n Number of valid
                                                              partitions
           -----------------------------------------------------------------
           Number of valid partitions < or = n     n               n
           -----------------------------------------------------------------

           <Sample description> DEVICE= (path name)\MODISK.SYS /S

       3) Specifying the drive ID (default: all MO disk drives used)
           /I {h:} m {[n]} {+{h:} m {[n]}}+...

           This parameter is used to identify the target MO drive by the host
           adapter number and SCSI-ID number.

           h is the host adapter number (between 0 and 9). The default is 0.
           m is the SCSI-ID number (0 to 7).
           n is the number of reserved drives. When n is omitted, the value
             specified with the /R option is used.

           Note : The host adapter number is 0(zero) if you have 1(one) SCSI
                  host adapter card.

       4)  Verify during formatting
           /V

           This option specifies complete verification during the format
           process. If this option is not specified, a simplified
           verification is carried out to shorten the formatting time.

  3.7 Notes on Use

      1) When the MODISK.SYS driver is loaded, a file with the name MO-DISK$
         cannot be created and accessed because the MO driver has assigned it
         as a device name. Do not try to use MO-DISK$ as a file name.

      2) Partitioned MO disks cannot be copied using the DISKCOPY command.
         Only non-partitioned MO disks (superfloppy disks) can be copied.

      3) When you have specified reserved drive names, if a reserved name is
         not allocated to a partition, if you try to access that logical drive,
         you will get a "drive not ready" message.

<<MOFORMAT Utility>>

4. OUTLINE

   The MOFORMAT utility formats an MO disk in a Fujitsu MO drive connected to
   an IBM PC compatible computer. Because of a lack of standardization for the
   disk format for MO disks betweeen manufacturers, there are many problems
   with unreadable MO disks. However, the MOFORMAT utility supports the
   future worldwide standard NSR format (ISO standard format, ISO13346) giving
   wide MO disk compatibility. OS/2 only supports the superfloppy format.
   MOFORMAT, however, supports all the standard NSR formats.

  4.1  Operating Environment

       Hardware;
       - IBM PC or 100% compatible
       - SCSI host adapter card
       - Fujitsu MO disk drive (128 or 230 MB) connected via a SCSI interface

       Software;
       - OS: OS/2 version 2.1 or later
       - SCSI adapter driver supplied with OS/2 (*.ADD file)
       - Fujitsu device driver MODISK.SYS

  4.2  MO Disk Formats Supported

       - 3.5-inch MO disk
       - Sector size:  512 bytes
       - Capacity:  128 MB or 230 MB

 5. DETAILED EXPLANATION

    MOFORMAT can do both low-level formatting and high-level formatting of an
    MO disk.

  5.1 Compatibility with the other systems.

       The MO formatter enables you to format a MO disk in the following
       formats;

       - The NSR format
       - The superfloppy format

       See 3.1 for an overview of each format. Disks formatted with MOFORMAT
       can be accessed using the following device drivers on DOS.

       DISK FORMAT Model OS@@@ Device Driver
       -----------------------------------------------------------------------
       NSR                        DOS/V  DOS 5, 6     MODISK2.SYS
       -----------------------------------------------------------------------
       Superfloppy                DOS/V  DOS 5, 6     IBMRWOPT.SYS (IBM)
                                                      ASPIDISK.SYS (adaptec)
                                                      TSCSI.SYS (Trantor)
                                                      UNI_ASP.SYS (Corel)
                                                      MODISK2.SYS
                                         OS/2         OPTICAL.SYS (IBM)
        -----------------------------------------------------------------------

  5.2  Low-level (physical) formatting

       Low-level formatting(long format, low level format means also same),
       which is the physical formatting of the disk surface, creates sectors
       on the disk. MOFORMAT enables you do a low-level format on an MO disk.
       Before you can use an MO disk, it must have been low-level formatted.
       However, low-level re-formatting is normally only required if the disk
       generates many errors during use. This is because nearly all MO disks
       currently on the market have already been low-level formatted before
       you buy them.

  5.3  High-level (logical) formatting

       The following table describes the logical formats supported by MOFORMAT.

                                           Formatting functions
                           ---------------------------------------------------
      Format Type Change Create Name of Delete
      which inserted Format Type Partitions Partition Partition
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Superfloppy format        OK            --          --           --
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------
      NSR format OK OK OK OK
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------
      PC/AT Hard Disk           OK            --          --           --
      Format
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------
      Unformatted Disk          OK            --          --           --
      ------------------------------------------------------------------------

       Note : "--" means "Not Supported".

       (1) Changing the format
           An MO disk can be reformatted into either the superfloppy format or
           the NSR format. Note that all existing data in the MO disk will be
           destroyed when reformatting the disk.

       (2) MOFORMAT can not create or modify partitions (such as changing a
           partition name or deleting a partition) on PC/AT hard disks, but it
           displays the allocation of partitions on the disk.

       (3) Partitioning an NSR formatted MO disk
           It is possible to create, delete, and modify partitions in
           NSR-formatted MO disks. Up to 10 partitions can be created on one
           MO disk. Unlike the FDISK utility on OS/2, there is no need to
           format partitions with the FORMAT command after creating
           partitions, because MOFORMAT automatically creates the FAT while
           formatting the partitions.

       (4) Automatic check for unformatted disks
           A message window is displayed if the inserted MO disk has not been
           low-level formatted.

       (5) Format check for MO disks
           Available formats using MOFORMAT are the superfloppy format and the
           NSR format. However, MOFORMAT recognizes not only superfloppy disks
           and the NSR format, but also the PC/AT hard disk format, and it
           displays the detected format and file system, so that the user can
           determine if it is the right disk to be formatted. See "6.4
          Partition Setup Window" for details.

 5.4  Software requirement and notes

      (1) Fujitsu MO driver (MODISK.SYS) must be installed to run the MOFORMAT
          utility.

      (2) MOFORMAT only formats MO disks with 512-byte sectors. Before
          formatting an MO disk with MOFORMAT, make sure that the disk has
          512-byte sectors.

 6. OPERATING PROCEDURES

  6.1  Starting the program
       There are two methods to start MOFORMAT.

       (1)Type MOFORMAT at the OS/2 command prompt and press Enter.
       (2)Change to the C:\OS/2 window and double click on the MOFORMAT.EXE
          icon.

       MOFORMAT starts and displays the Select Device window. If the MO driver
       is not properly installed, the following message is displayed.

       "Driver initialization has failed."

       Then Clicking "OK" returns the screen to the Select Device window.
       Check that the MO driver is installed correctly and restart the program.

 7. OTHER FORMATTING UTILITIES

  7.1 The OS/2 standard format utility

       Follow the instruction below to use the format utility that is supplied
       with the OS/2 system.

       The examples assume the following setup;

       - Drive C:\, as the OS/2 system bootup disk.
       - External MO drive D:\.

       (1) Double click on the OS/2 System icon.
       (2) Double click on the Drive icon in the OS/2 System Icon Display
           window.
       (3) Click on the Drive D icon in the Drive Icon Display window with the
           right mouse button, and select Disk Format from the pulldown menu.

       (4) After typing a volume label in the Format: Disk D window, click the
           Low-level Format check box and click the Format button.
           Formatting starts.

       * Low-level formatting(Long Format) takes approximately 20 minutes.

  7.2  Low-level format

       The low level format on a disk is sometimes called the physical format
       or long format. Low-level formatting destroys all existing data on the
       MO disk, and the formatting process cannot be interrupted once started.
       If you forcibly interrupt low-level formatting (by ejecting the MO
       disk), the MO disk cannot be used until it is reformatted.

  7.3  Logical format

       - You can reformat a Superfloppy-formatted disk to the same Superfloppy
         format using the standard FORMAT command. It is also possible to
         reformat partitions on a disk formatted in the PC/AT hard disk format
         or in the NSR format.

       - When the target MO disk is unformatted, or when the boot sector in
         the active partition on the target MO disk is corrupted, the default
         BPB information is automatically created to enable reformatting.

       *1) You can use MOFORMAT to create and change partitions on an
           NSR-formatted disk.

       *2) Partitions cannot be created or modified on a PC/AT format disk.

  7.4  Notes on Use

       1) Due to the FORMAT command of OS/2 set the OS/2 IPL information on to
          the cartridge, this cartridge can not IPL from the MS-DOS when if
          you reformat within the partition of PC/AT.

       2) The FDISK utility cannot be used to create partitions on an MO disk.
          MO disk partitions use the NSR-DOS format, and can only be created by
          the MOFORMAT utility.

       3) If you try to do a low-level format on a completely unformatted MO
          disk using the standard FORMAT command, the disk will be formatted as
          a 128 MB disk, irrespective of its true capacity. This is because the
          FORMAT command cannot detect the total number of sectors available on
          a blank MO disk. If you subsequently reformat the disk with the
          MOFORMAT utility, it can be formatted to its true size.
