Nikon Scan Version 1.43E (1997. 2)

>> About this installer disk

This disk will install Nikon's 16-bit program files to your hard disk.
Please use this installer if you are using:
Windows 3.x or Windows for Workgroups
Windows 95 and a 16-bit program as the scanner's host application
  (e.g. Adobe Photoshop 2.5).
If you are using Windows 95 and a 32-bit program as the scanner's host
application (e.g. Adobe Photoshop 3.05), please use the disk labelled
"Nikon Scan 95".

>> About new features

A new scanner driver is included. This driver supports the AX-110 and
  the AX-210 flatbed scanner.
A new 32-bit installer has been developed. This new installer contains
all Nikon program files needed for Windows 95.

>> About automated continuous scans

Automated continuous scanning is available with Photoshop when the
LS-1000 scanner and the SF-100 film feeder are used. Holding down the
Ctrl key while pressing the Scan button on the NikonScan window will
start a continuous scan.

>> Installation Notes

To install, run "Setup.exe" either from the File Manager, Windows
Explorer, or from the File/Run command in Program Manager.

When installing in Windows 95, insert the "Nikon Scan 95" disk when
you are prompted to supply a driver disk for new hardware that has
been detected.

If you are running Windows 95, attached the scanner to your PC, and
restarted BEFORE reading this file ( and aren't we all always excited
about a new piece of hardware ), you MUST...

1. In the Control Panel, open "Add New Hardware". Click the "Next"
button and then click "No", when asked to auto-detect new hardware.
2. When prompted for the hardware type, click on "? Other Devices",
then click the "Next" button. Click the "Have Disk" button.
3. After inserting the Nikon Scan disk and clicking "OK", select the
appropriate Scanner model and once again click the "Next" button.
4. Windows 95 will decompress and copy the appropriate drivers to
   your system.

The installer will place the Nikon TWAIN source and scanner drivers
on your system (the Scanner drivers are in a directory called "MAIDMODS")
Please do not move or rename this folder or your scanner will stop
working .

>> Known problems with NikonScan

Some TWAIN Compliant Applications (such as the Adaptec Scanning
Utility, which is part of the full EZ-SCSI package and Corel Photopaint)
limit the maximum scanned file size to 16 Megabytes. This will be
addressed in the next revision of the Nikon Scan TWAIN Source.

You may have a problem when you try to open Nikon Scan, if you are
using a certain version of PhotoShop 3.0. In this case, please copy
the new "twain8b.8ba" from the Nikon Scan installer disk into the
  Adobe PhotoShop "plugins" directory.

16-bit Nikon programs can only be used with 16-bit host applications
  and a 16-bit TWAIN driver.

>> How to use TWAIN sources

Using the Nikon TWAIN source in any Windows application is a two-step
process. First, you must tell the application which TWAIN source you
wish to use. For Photoshop, you choose "Select TWAIN Source" from the
"Acquire" menu. Once you have selected the Source, you can then go back
to the Acquire menu and select "TWAIN". Please note that the current
TWAIN source is not 32 bit, so selecting "TWAIN 32" will result in an
error being reported by Photoshop. Other applications use phrases like
"scanner setup" or "Source Select" to select a TWAIN source. Please
refer to your application's documentation for the proper TWAIN selection
procedure.

In Nikon Control 2.0, the TWAIN source selection dialog is found in
the "Preferences" item under the "File" menu. If a Nikon Scanner is
not found during the startup of Nikon Control 2.0, the TWAIN selection
dialog will display "Not Connected" as the source name, but you will
still be able to carry out file operations (e.g. open and save).

>> Frequently Asked Questions

Q. I keep getting memory errors when using Nikon Control, but I have
plenty of RAM in my machine.

A. Scanning with an autofeeder may require a large amount of disk
space as well as system RAM. Try to free more disk space before
   starting the scan again.

>> Note to users of Windows 95 upgrading from Windows 3.1/3.11

The Windows 95 version(s) of Nikon Scan cannot read settings files
created by versions of Nikon Scan running under Windows 3.1/3.11.

>> Note to users upgrading from Nikon Scan 1.2

The current version of Nikon Scan is release diskette 1.4.
This version is unable to read the settings files created by Nikon
Scan release 1.2.

Version 1.3 of Nikon Scan is also incompatible with the settings
files created with version 1.2 of Nikon Scan.

To avoid problems, please do not use the settings files created with
your existing versions of Nikon Scan when upgrading from version 1.2
Nikon Scan or Windows 3.1/3.11.

>> Technical Note

The settings files are held in the folder \WINDOWS\TWAIN
(Windows 3.1 or 3.11 systems) and in the folder \WINDOWS\TWAIN_32
(Windows 95 systems) and have the file extension suffix .NTS
