Server
In the Server tab, you can manage added servers. There are two server modes for CMS: host and recording. Depending on which mode your server is operating in, different content will be displayed. You can change the server mode at CMS > Advanced.
Host Server
When your server acts as the host, you can add, delete, edit, enable/disable, and lock/unlock recording servers. The server tab is divided into three areas:
- The left panel shows all server statuses. You can filter recording servers by selecting a status.
- The upper-right panel lists all servers of the selected status. Basic server information is also shown.
- The lower-right panel contains two tabs. In the General tab, additional server and status information is displayed. In the Applications tab, you can directly manage the displayed applications of the selected server.
Add Servers
You can add recording servers one by one or add multiple servers at once. Please refer to the following steps.
To add a recording server:
- Click the Add button and select Add Server
- Enter a name to identify the recording server.
- Enter the recording server's IP address or host name and port number. You can also click Search to search for Synology servers within the same domain.
- If you select a Synology server whose CMS mode is Recording Server, its IP address and port number will be entered automatically.
- If you want to add a Synology server that has not yet activated its CMS service, you can click the Enable link and enter its admin password to enable the CMS service. Tick advanced options such as security lock and time synchronization if necessary.
- Enter the admin password of the server.
- You can click Test Connection to see if the server has been set up properly.
- Click Next to edit the advanced settings:
- Prevent other CMS hosts from pairing with this recording server: Locks this recording server to the paired CMS host so that it cannot be added by other CMS hosts.
- Prevent users on this recording server from making changes to it: Restricts access to the settings of a recording server by preventing users from performing any operations after login. admin or users belonging to the administrators group on the recording server will only have access to the Advanced page, where they can modify this option afterwards. Users without administrative privileges will not be able to view or modify any settings after login.
- Synchronize the time on this server with CMS host: Allows time synchronization between the recording server and CMS host via the NTP service. The original time settings on recording server can be restored after canceling this option.
To add multiple recording servers:
- Click the Add button and select Add Batch.
- From search results, select the servers which you want to add.
- If you want to add a Synology server whose CMS mode is Recording Server, double-click this server or click the Edit button to enter the admin password and name the server.
- If you want to add a Synology server that has not yet activated its CMS service, you can click the Enable link and enter its admin password to enable the CMS service. Tick advanced options such as security lock and time synchronization if necessary.
- In the Edit window, select Custom name if you want to customize a new name, or select Apply naming rule and choose from the Naming rule drop-down menu to set the default naming rule:
- Default DiskStation name: The model names of Synology servers will be the display names of recording servers.
- Model-No.: The names of the recording servers will be "[Model Name]-[Recording Sever Number]".
- Prefix-No.: You need to specify the prefix of recording server names in the Custom Prefix field. The names of the recording servers will be "[Prefix]-[Recording Server Number]".
- When you are all done, click OK to add all the selected recording servers.
Note:
- The name of a recording server is case sensitive and can contain 1 to 32 Unicode characters, excluding the following symbols:
! " # $ % & ' ( ) * + , / : ; < = > ? @ [ ] \ ^ ` { } | ~
The first character cannot be a minus sign or a space, and the last character cannot be a space.
- Surveillance Station may not be properly run in Internet Explorer if any one of the files in the installation directory is missing, modified, or crashed. To solve this problem, click the gear icon at the top-right corner of the IE browser, and then go to Manage Add-ons > Toolbars and Extensions. Scroll down the add-ons list to select "SSObject2 Control" under Synology Inc., click Disable (or right-click to choose Disable) to disable the ActiveX add-on, and log in to Surveillance Station again.
Manage Servers
Please follow the steps below to edit, delete your recording servers or apply security lock to protect them over network.
To edit a recording server:
- Choose the recording server you want to edit and click Edit.
- You can edit camera information such as name, IP address, port number, and admin password. Or you can modify advanced options such as security lock and time synchronization.
- Click OK to save the changes.
To delete recording servers:

Choose the recording servers you want to remove. (Press and hold the Ctrl or Shift key for multiple selections.)

Click Delete.
To enable or disable recording servers:

Choose the recording servers you want to enable/disable. (Press and hold the Ctrl or Shift key for multiple selections.)

Choose Enable or Disable from the Enable drop-down menu.
Note:
You will no longer have access to the camera data and live view of recording servers which have been disabled.
To lock or unlock recording servers:
Locking recording servers helps prevent other CMS hosts within local network from pairing with your recording servers. Click Lock or Unlock and do either of the following:
- Lock all / Unlock all: All recording servers will be locked/unlocked.
- Lock selected / Unlock selected: The selected recording servers will be locked/unlocked.
To view video streams from recording servers:

Go to Live View and add cameras of a recording server to the layout to watch live views.

Go to Timeline and choose a server from the source drop-down menu to watch videos recorded by its cameras.
Note:
If a CMS host and its recording servers are communicating via internal IP, you might encounter technical issues receiving video feeds of recording servers over the Internet.
Therefore, when using a web browser to access a central management system from a different domain, you will need a relay service to receive cross-domain video feeds from recording servers. For example, with video relay service enabled, you can watch videos of the recording servers located on your office network even if you are at home. Go to Advanced to enable video relay service.
To edit the applications of recording servers:
- In the upper-right panel, select a recording server.
- Click on Applications in the lower-right panel.
- Click an application to open it in a new window and make your changes. For more information on these applications, please refer to Help.
Recording Server
When your server acts as a recording server, you can view the paired host server status as well as lock/unlock this recording server. Locking your recording server prevents other servers from making changes to your server settings. You can also switch the server mode.
To lock or unlock your recording server:
- Under Lock Setting, select either Lock me or Unlock me to lock or unlock your recording server.
- Click Apply to save your changes.
To change the server mode:
- In the Advanced tab, select either Host server mode or Recording server mode to switch the mode for your server.
- Click Apply to save your changes.
