Notification
Surveillance Station can send you a system notification via e-mail, SMS message, mobile device, MSN (Windows Live Messenger), and Skype, when an event occurs.
Note:
- Make sure you have set up e-mail, SMS, mobile device, MSN, or Skype-related settings at Notification > Service before specifying notification types and schedule at Notification > Settings.
- If your Synology NAS is a CMS host, you can view and edit the notification settings and services of managed recording servers.
Manage Notification Events and Schedule
You can select types of notification events which will trigger Surveillance Station to send notification messages to any of your desired medium (e-mail, SMS, mobile, or instant messaging programs), and configure notification schedule according to your preferences at Notification > Settings. Notification events are divided into two categories: System and Camera.
To select the types and medium of notification events:
- Select a notification event from the left panel, and tick checkboxes on the right panel to select the notification medium you prefer.
- Click Save.
To set the notification schedule for a notification event:
- Choose a notification event you want to schedule from the left panel.

For notification events in the System category, click Allow Notification or Delete, and then click or drag on the grid to limit event notification to certain periods of a week.

For notification events in the Camera category, choose a camera from the drop-down menus to specify which camera will trigger event notification. Click Allow Notification or Delete, and then click or drag on the grid to limit the camera's event notification to certain periods of a week.
- Click Save to apply the schedule to the selected notification event.
To batch edit notification schedule for notification events:
- Click Edit Batch to open the Notification Batch Edit Wizard.
- Follow the Wizard to complete the setup.
Set up Notification Medium
With various types of medium such as e-mail, SMS, mobile, and instant messaging programs supported by Surveillance Station, you can enable any of its settings to receive notification messages when the events selected at Notification > Settings occur.
Email
You can set up email notification in order for Surveillance Station to send you a system notification by email.
To set up email notification:
- Tick the Enable e-mail notifications checkbox.
- Choose whether you would like to apply the notification settings specified at DSM > Control Panel > Notification, or enter new email addresses.
- If you choose to enter new email addresses, please do the following:
- Specify a primary and a secondary email address. We will send notifications to both email addresses simultaneously.
- If necessary, add a subject prefix in the Subject prefix field. This prefix will be added to the subject of each message sent by Surveillance Station, thus helping you identify and filter messages sent by Surveillance Station.
- Choose an email server to handle email delivery. You can use an email server provided by Synology, a third-party email service provider, or use a custom SMTP server. See each section below for instructions.
To use email server hosted by Synology:
- After enabling notifications and entering at least one recipient, tick Use email server hosted by Synology.
- Click Save, and a verification mail should be sent to the addresses you have specified. Please follow the steps in the verification mail.
- After verification, you can click Send a test email to see if your settings are correct.
To use a third-party email service:
- After enabling notifications and entering at least one recipient, tick Use custom email server.
- In the Service provider menu, choose a third-party email service, such as Gmail, Yahoo, or Outlook.
- Enter your username and password for the selected email service.
- Click Save to save settings.
- You can click Send a test email to see if your settings are correct.
To use a custom SMTP server:
- After enabling notifications and entering at least one recipient, tick Use custom email server.
- In the Service provider menu, select Custom SMTP server.
- Enter the SMTP server name or IP address in the SMTP server field.
- Enter the SMTP port number in the SMTP port field. (If you have specified a different SMTP port while setting up port forwarding rules, please enter that number.)
- If your SMTP server requires SMTP authentication, tick Authentication required, enter your Username and Password for the email server.
- If your SMTP server requires SSL/TLS connection, tick Secure connection (SSL/TLS) is required.
- If you want to customize sender's name that appears on email messages sent by the Surveillance Station, enter the name in the Sender name field. If you want to customize sender's email address, enter the email address in the Sender email field. If the field is blank, the first email address in the Primary email and Secondary email field will be used.
- Click Save to save settings.
- You can click Send a test email to see if your settings are correct.
Limitations:
- Username: Case sensitive. 1 to 32 Unicode characters are allowed.
- Password: Case sensitive and should be between 0 to 24 displayable characters, including letters, numbers, signs, and space.
SMTP Server Domain Name:
The SMTP server can be an IP address or a domain name. If it is a domain name, please make sure a valid DNS server IP has been entered at DSM > Control Panel > Network, and make sure the server is on the Internet.
SMS
You can set up SMS notification to receive system notifications from Surveillance Station via SMS messages.
To set up SMS notification:
- Tick the Enable SMS notifications checkbox.
- Choose whether you would like to apply the notification settings specified at DSM > Control Panel > Notification, or enter new phone numbers and SMS information.

If you choose to enter new phone numbers and SMS information, please do the following:
- Select a SMS provider from the drop-down menu. The default service provider is "Clickatell."
- You can also create a new SMS provider configuration or delete a selected SMS provider configuration. See below for detailed instructions.
- Enter the username and password of your SMS service account. The username is case sensitive and must be between 1 and 32 Unicode characters. The password is case sensitive and must be between 0 and 24 displayable characters, including letters, numbers, signs, and space.
- Specify your primary and secondary phone numbers. We will send notifications to both phone numbers simultaneously.
- If you do not wish to receive too many messages, tick Minimum message interval (minutes) and specify the time interval during which you will only receive one message. The value must be between 1 and 10000.
- Click Send a test SMS message to send a test SMS message to the phone number you specified. If no message is received, it means the configuration is incorrect.
To add an SMS provider:
- Click Add SMS service provider.
- In the Provider name field, enter the name of your SMS service provider. The provider name is case sensitive and must be between 1 and 32 Unicode characters.
- In the SMS URL field, enter a SMS URL with the message content set to "Hello world." You can obtain the SMS URL from your SMS service provider. The SMS URL is case sensitive and must be between 1 and 500 Unicode characters.
- Click Next.
- On the URL parameter definition page, the system will break down the SMS URL into several parameters. Define each parameter by selecting the corresponding category. Each parameter category can be used only once except Other.
Note:
The number of parameters must be between 4 and 10.
Push Service
You can enable push service to send notification messages to your mobile devices and instant messaging programs (Windows Live Messenger and Skype) via Synology's push service server when status changes or errors occur to cameras.
To enable mobile device notifications:
- On your computer, tick Enable mobile device notifications, and then click Save.
- On your mobile device, install DS cam and log in to Surveillance Station with it.
- Back on your computer, click Send a test message and then click OK to send a test notification. Now you can launch DS cam on your mobile device to check whether you have received the test message.
To manage paired mobile devices:
- Click Manage paired devices to see the list of all paired mobile devices.
- If you want to unpair any of the devices, select them and click Unpair. (Press and hold Shift or Ctrl while making multiple selections.) No notification will be sent to them unless you pair them up again.
