Synthesis, spectroscopy, thermal and biological aspect of novel six-coordinated dimeric iron(III) mixed-ligand complexes (p 415-426)
M. N. Patel, P. B. Pansuriya, M. R. Chhasatia
Published Online: Jun 13 2008 10:48AM
DOI: 10.1002/aoc.1417

Drug-Fe(III) complexes have been synthesized. Structures of the complexes have been investigated using spectroscopic techniques. All the complexes exhibit higher antibacterial activity than parental compounds. The binding and cleavage efficacy of pBR322 DNA with drug- Fe(III) complexes have been carried out using absorption titration and gel electrophoresis techniques. All the complexes exhibit higher binding and cleavage efficacy than parental compounds.

ortho-(Aminomethyl)phenylboronic acids - synthesis, structure and sugar receptor activity (p 427-432)
Agnieszka Adamczyk-Wozacuteniak, Zbigniew Brzózka, Michalstrok. Cyranacuteski, Alicja Filipowicz-Szymanacuteska, Paulinalimentowska, Anna Zdotubrowska, amil Zdotukowski, Andrzej Sporzynacuteski

DOI: 10.1002/aoc.1418

A series of ortho-(aminomethyl)- phenylboronic acids was synthesized and their structures were determined by single-crystal X-ray diffraction. The structures are stabilized by the inter- and intramolecular hydrogen bonds. The sugar-binding ability of these compounds was evaluated for D-glucose, D-fructose and D-galactose by the competition assay with Alizarin Red S (ARS). The results indicate that the sugar binding ability and selectivity towards sugars depend on the substituents in amino group.

Effect of diorganotin(IV) carboxylate complexes, [N-(2-carboxyphenyl) salicylideneiminato]dimethyltin(IV), bis(µ3-oxo)bis(µ-O-aminobenzoato-O,Oprime) bis(O-aminobenzoato)tetrakis[dimethyltin(IV)] and bis(O-aminobenzoato-O,Oprime) di-n-butyltin(IV), on the membrane of Candida albicans cells - a mechanistic investigation of the antifungal activity of organotin complexes (p 433-439)

No DNA damage or interference with the mitochondria function has been detected in the drug-treated cells of Candida albicans (ATCC 18804). However, the organotin complexes [N-(2-carboxyphenyl)salicylideneiminato]dimethyltin(IV) (1), bis(µ3-oxo)bis(µ-O-amino-benzoato-O,O')bis(O-amino benzoato) tetrakis[dimethyltin(IV)] (2), and bis(O-aminobenzoato-O,O')di-n-butyltin(IV) (3) cause severe interference with the biosynthesis of ergosterol, compromising the cellular integrity and morphology. The organotin complexes act on the cell membrane, sharing mechanistic similarities with azole drugs, such asetoconazole or fluconazole

Spectroscopic and thermal characterization of the host-guest interactions between alpha-, beta- and gamma-cyclodextrins and vanadocene dichloride (p 440-450)
Alexis Morales, Ralph T. Weber, Enrique Melendez
Published Online: Jun 25 2008 4:21AM
DOI: 10.1002/aoc.1420

Host-guest interactions between -, -, and -cyclodextrins and vanadocene dichloride (Cp2VCl2) have been investigated by thermal and spectroscopic methods. The solid-state results demonstrated that only - and -cyclodextrins form 1:1 inclusion complexes, while -cyclodextrin does not form an inclusion complex with Cp2VCl2. The - and -CD-Cp2VCl2 inclusion complexes exhibited anisotropic electron-51V (I = 7/2) hyperfine coupling constants, whereas the -CD-Cp2VCl2 system showed only an asymmetric peak with no anisotropic hyperfine constant. On the other hand, solution EPR spectroscopy showed that -CD may be involved in weak host-guest interactions in equilibrium with free vanadocene species.

Synthesis and properties of N3 and CN delivery compounds and related precursors for nitride and ceramic fabrication (p 451-459)
Jesse B. Tice, C. J. Ritter, A. V. G. Chizmeshya, Brandon Forrest, Levi Torrison, T. L. Groy, J.ouvetakis
Published Online: Jun 25 2008 4:21AM
DOI: 10.1002/aoc.1422

A new family of cyanide and azide delivery compounds has been synthesized, including Cl2AsN3, Br2AsN3, (C6H5)SiH2N3, (C6H5)SiH2CN and p-(tolyl)SiH2CN, which are shown to react readily with metal halides to produce useful precursors for the subsequent deposition of optoelectronic nitrides and the formation of porous cyanide framework solids.

Polyhedral oligomeric silsesquioxane bound fulleropyrrolidines (p 460-465)
David J. Clarke, Janis G. Matisons, George R. Simon, Marek Samoc, Anna Samoc
Published Online: Jun 25 2008 4:21AM
DOI: 10.1002/aoc.1425

The first reported examples of POSS cages containing a fulleropyrrolidine species are reported herein. Monosubstituted POSS-aldehyde species were synthesized through two synthetic pathways, which were then reacted with N-methylglycine and C60 to yield POSS fulleropyrrolidines. The prepared compounds were characterized by multinuclear NMR, electrospray mass spectrometry, UV-vis, fluorescence and optical power limiting measurements.
